| MECSC to explore the evolving role of leasing
Aimed at regional mall operators and retailers, the workshop will highlight all aspects of lease management and the importance of well planned and researched leasing initiatives. The two day programme from October 24-25, 2007 at the Burjuman Rotana Suites in Dubai, will be led by Walter Kleinschmit, President of R2E Consultants Inc and former General Manager for Kingdom Centre in Riyadh, KSA. 'Proper lease management helps to maximise returns by creating an efficient and dynamic environment for retailers which in turn will ensure quality shopping experience for consumers. This involves developing a strong relationship with retailers and providing them a proper location, ensuring customer traffic and a reasonable duration in which retailers can achieve their business goals,' said Walter Kleinschmit.
CRM top of retailers' IT to-do list
In the face of cut-throat competition from their rivals, retailers are investing in new systems to give them as much information as possible about their own customers. High street competition is fierce, with supermarkets in particular broadening their offerings from their traditional focus on groceries into clothing, electronics and banking products. And, at the same time, customers are less and less likely to be loyal to a particular store. As a result, retailers will up their spending on customer relationship management programmes, according to research by analyst house Pierre Audoin Consultants (PAC). PAC consultant Henrietta Lacey told silicon.com: "In the UK one of the main growth areas is in CRM systems, especially with embedded business intelligence functionality.

'Bill of Rights' quietly added to Miami ballot
Miami voters are being asked Jan. 29 to approve a 'Citizens' Bill of Rights'' that would, among other things, promote religious freedom, clean air and scenic beauty. It would also ban discrimination on the basis of domestic relationship status, sexual orientation and gender identity and expression -- though relatively few people are aware of it. The proposed city charter change hasn't drawn much attention. The actual ballot wording never mentions gay or transgender rights. On Monday, even some leading gay and Christian activists didn't know anything about it. ''I'm shocked,'' said Ron Brenesky, a co-founder of Unity Coalition, one of Miami-Dade County's leading Hispanic gay-rights groups. ``I commend the city for trying to do this. I commend the spirit, but not the method.
Speed Kills Capital One Reports
Never mind the old days when newspapers tripped over each other to get exclusives out so the corner paper boys could shout "Extra! Extra!." Today, an ostentatious level of speed is thought to be essential to competing in news. The problem is that the emphasis on speed puts investors in harm's way, and needlessly so. We saw a textbook example in coverage late Wednesday of Capital One (COF - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr). .
Police puppy makes online debut
Officers said the puppy, one of a litter of seven, has attracted huge interest since he was unveiled as the force's latest crime-fighting weapon. The dog's new handler, Constable Mike Keenan, said: "The benefits of using German Shepherds are that they are generally very loyal and hard working, as well as being intelligent." Keenan's wife Jennifer has asked pupils from St Ninian's Primary School in Dundee to come up with a name for the puppy.
