Orange pay TV on satellite
Orange is set to launch a pay satellite TV service for France in the coming weeks, Les Echos has reported. The group wants to be able to offer the service to all of its seven million broadband subs, many of whom are unable to receive TV via ADSL yet. Orange IPTV currently offers pay-TV services supplied by Canal Plus, and an Orange owned and operated service would be a significant blow to them. This week Orange was among those bidding for premier soccer rights in France and told AFP "Orange needs content to bring out the value of its networks." Gates pushes ‘creative capitalism’
Bill Gates, the Microsoft chairman, issued a call on Thursday night for a new form of “creative capitalism" that works both to generate profits and solve the world's inequities. Reflecting on his Microsoft career as he prepares to leave the company this summer to focus on his foundation, he noted how his ideals had changed over the years. “Ten, 20, 30 years ago, my focus was totally on how the magic of software could change the world," he said. “But breakthroughs change lives only where people can afford to buy them." He called on companies to “find a way to make the aspects of capitalism that serve wealthier people serve poorer people as well". He hoped the power of recognition for a good deed would do the trick as a “market-based reward for good behaviour".
Scarborough: 'We' Like Obama, But Those Racist Reagan Democrats Don't
Scarborough managed to simultaneously insult Middle America and the Republican party of which he claims to be a member. He casts Reagan Democrats as a largely racist lot. And when he says that Barack Obama "would not be attacked head on by the Republicans," the obvious implication is that the GOP would attack him indirectly by appealing to that reputedly racist sentiment of the Reagan Democrats. Note: over at the liberal American Prospect, Ezra Klein claims to have identified a trend: "disaffected, elite Republicans" who are supporting Obama. Let me take a stab at explaining this phenomenon: it isn't one. —Mark Finkelstein is a NewsBusters contributing editor and host of Right Angle. Contact him at mark@gunhill.net. .

GM's next generation Chevrolet Impala will remain FWD-based
The first victims of the new energy bill are already starting to show up just a month after the new energy bill passed. General Motors announced that it cancelled plans to build new versions of its Northstar V8 engine. GM's Northstar engine was introduced in the 1990s and has been a staple in the engine bay of high-end Cadillac luxury vehicles. GM will instead rely on its direct-injection (DI) 3.6 liter V6 engine to power its luxury vehicles. The DI V6 produces 304 HP in the CTS compared to the 320 HP, 4.6 liter Northstar V8 engine used in the larger STS. The V6 engine does, however, have a huge deficit in the area of torque when compared to the current Northstar V8 -- the V6 produces just 273 lb-ft of torque while the V8 delivers 315 lb-ft. GM claims that the move to the DI V6 will not only improve the fuel economy of its larger vehicles, but will also save weight across the board -- the V6 is anywhere from 150 pounds to 200 pounds lighter than the Northstar V8.
