| Gillard handed national IR blueprint
Many unions must realize that it won't take much to unseat the Rudd government if they don't step back and consider this point. I do agree that we need to have a balance within this country's I/R system and let's see how the states/territories respond. Agree (0) Alert moderator Brian: 25 Jan 2008 11:21:35am It appears that this report is far more about centralised power than it is about IR.If this is so, then the ideas need to be extended to explore the inter-related roles of all three levels of government; four if you include regional government. Here in Queensland, the state government is in the process of destroying local government by amalgamating them into regional sized units. This is way too much centralisation and removal of decision making away from the local level for my appetite. However, it appears to me that the major parties are both agreed that it would be better if government in Australia can be reduced to one winner-take-all national level.Meanwhile, the voter will have to deal with ballot papers the size of a quarter acre lot and the tendency will be to vote above the line; for the major political parties. Some centralisation may be justified, but the destruction of local government is certainly a bad move.Labor spent the last three years bleating about Howard having too much power, thanks to his Senate majority.
How to stay employed if (when) a recession hits
With global stock markets in flux and the US economy either in the midst of a recession or teetering on the edge, there are steps you can take that may help protect your IT job. It may not be a bad idea to start thinking about such things, say several employment experts who are closely watching job statistics and other economic indicators. "Right now, in this day and age, if anyone is working in IT, the closer you work on relationships with customers, the better the opportunities you're going to have," said Jim Lanzalatto, vice president of strategy and marketing at staffing agency Yoh in Philadelphia. "That's in any economic environment, but it's more critical in this economic environment." Follow the customers In tough times, he said, the first IT projects to be eliminated are the ones that are farthest away from creating customer value, such as internally-faced projects.
Joe Sixpack: Heavyweight pair prepares for lighter fare
This stretch of Germantown Avenue is already home to one of Philly's most popular neighborhood taverns, McMenamin's. Earth Bread + Brewery, opening just a few doors down in the former Anglesea Pub, looks to be a welcome addition. "We never had a good local bar in Jersey," said Zwerver. "We always wanted a comfortable place to go out and enjoy good beer." "We're building this place for ourselves," said Baker. "We just hope people come here, too." Belgian invasion If you missed "Belgium Comes to West Chester" last year, you missed one of the region's best new beer events. Held at Iron Hill Brewery (3 W. Gay St., West Chester), it featured a fine three-course menu paired with local versions of classic Belgian styles. Why do I mention last year's fest? Because it's back tomorrow, and there's no excuse for missing this one.

Revenues of $100.5 million essentially consistent with the third quarter of 2006. Cuba's Castro says he thought 2006 illness "would be the end"
Fidel Castro revealed Thursday that he thought he was dying when he fell ill in July 2006, and hastily made plans to give up power as doctors fought to save his life. "When I fell gravely ill the night of the 26th and dawn of the 27th of July, I thought that would be the end," the ailing 81-year-old wrote in an essay published on the front page of state newspapers. "And while the doctors fought for my life, the head aide of the Council of State read at my urging the text and I dictated the necessary arrangements," he wrote, referring to transcripts of interviews he gave a French journalist between 2003 and 2005. Evidently focused on his legacy, Castro spent the first months of his convalescence reviewing and editing more than 100 hours of interviews given to Ignacio Ramonet, editor of Le Monde Diplomatique.
